CABRILLO FARM
Vendor: Edward + Shirley Lea
Shirley Lea is the 3rd generation of Cabrillos to work the family farm in Half Moon Bay; her grandfather, father, and brother have all been part of the family business. Shirley says Jose Contreras (another vendor at PAFM) told her grandfather about the Market in Palo Alto, and so Cabrillo Farms began selling at PAFM some 20 years ago. According to Shirley, her grandfather said he brought her into the business, “to keep me out of trouble”. The Cabrillos were affected by the “artichoke wars” that broke out in the 1930s, with mafia thugs ravaging many of the 2000 acres of artichokes growing then in order to coerce growers into selling to New York-based gangsters in a food racket. This led to a ban on selling of artichokes in New York, and eventually the conviction of several hoodlums on racketeering related charges. Things are quieter in Half Moon Bay these days. Cabrillo Farms brings artichokes, peas and beans to the market in the spring and early summer, and brussel sprouts in late fall; all prized for the freshness of the produce. Shirley enjoys the other growers at our market, and the family spirit that holds sway in “their” corner of the market.
