C Farm, with its amazing variety of both Asian and Western vegetables, is result of the hard work of Mo Yang and Chia Thao. Mo and Chia started the farm in 1992 on five acres of land in Sanger, California. Today, C Farm has expanded to 10 acres and produces all manner of vegetables: tomatoes, green beans, okra, peanuts, peppers, cucumbers, as well as their signature long beans, bok choy, and seven different varieties of eggplant from around the world.

At PAFM, Mo is the one you see every Saturday morning. Mo has farming in her blood; her father was a farmer and she married a farmer as well (and his family are all farmers, too). Mo is driven by the desire “to bring fresh produce to the customer.” To this end, she travels 280 miles from Sanger to get here every Saturday, leaving home at 2:30am to get here in time for the 8am Market opening.

“I love this market,” she says. “People are so nice. Many customers come back every week.” Of course they do. Between the delicious tomatoes, the dazzling piles of fresh produce, and Mo’s uncanny ability to help several customers at once and still be cheerful, who could stay away?

Mo also appreciates that the PAFM supports its farmers by ensuring each farmer keeps a core niche market. C Farm’s niche is Asian vegetables, but if you walk around the market, you’ll notice the same is true for most stands; Nancy, the PAFM Market Manager, works to make sure that each stand has a core set of products that is unique to the Market.

Recipe: Mo’s favorite recipe is stir-fried Chinese long beans with bell peppers in oyster sauce and olive oil. Use a wok and make sure the olive oil is really hot!
