PRODUCT PROFILE
HEIRLOOM TOMATOES
Heirloom tomatoes embody the farmers market experience. Each year, from mid-summer to late fall, crates of these unique varietals fill our vendor stands with a wonderful parade of changing colors. While the term “heirloom” is not scientifically or commercially precise, it generally refers to a set of tomato cultivars that predate industrial agriculture practices. Heirloom tomatoes varieties may be 50-100+ years old and many are truly heirlooms in the sense the seeds were passed down from generation to generation. Despite the confusion surrounding the name, most growers and consumers agree that this broad category of fruit (or vegetable!) possess phenomenal taste and quality. From the sweet Brandywine, to the intense Cherokee Purple, to the delicate Garden Peach, to the tangy Green Zebra and the two-toned Marvel Stripe, heirloom tomatoes are a feast both for the palate and eyes. They are delicious consumed as-is and make a delightful addition to any summer salad, tossed with greens or cucumbers, dressed with oil and vinegar, or paired with herbs and cheese. But they are also versatile, great in a salsa or a cool gazpacho or as the perfect companion for meats and seafoods sizzling on the summer grill. Our own favorite recipe is for PANZANELLA, a hearty way to make use of any leftover bread. Heirloom tomatoes on Wikipedia |
